María Montez, the Queen of Technicolor

María Montez, Queen of Technicolor

“When I look at myself, I am so beautiful I scream with joy!”

Born María África Gracia Vidal in Baní, Barahona, the Dominican Republic, María Montez became one of the great movie stars and beauties of Hollywood in the 1940s.

“The first thing a young lady should do for being an actress is to believe she is the most beautiful and important of all the women who live on Earth. In other words, behave as if you were a queen. Do not be afraid in front of any of the directors, not even how exigent and ill-tempered they could look to you. Remember, my dear Lucita, it is the public and not them, who has the last word.”

This girl from Baní knew very well the power of beauty. By believing in herself she made everybody respect her, even in a strange land, and she realized all of her dreams. And this is the secret of beauty: to believe in yourself. From that comes self-esteem and confidence, and this is what makes you beautiful. Which is why I say that beauty is just a state of mind. But even so, make-up has a role to play. The Dominican cosmetologist Carolina Saladín writes:

“One of the most striking attributes of María Montez was her face, and its natural style of makeup. She covered any imperfection or shadows under the eyes or any part of the face with a light concealer. The foundation, always lightweight, lent a porecelain quality to her skin that, together with the powders, covered the whole face to create an image of fresh natural skin. She profiled her eyebrows in the same color as her hair, and she always had them perfectly defined and shaped.

“The eye-shadow colors that María Montez used were neutral tones and they adapted themselves to every occasion or any activity, whether it was an night out, a film, or a celebrity appearance, but always looking very natural. The use of mascara has always been a very important element, since this is the final touch that gives amplitude and helps to highlight the eyes. She defined her cheeks with peach and rose tones and usually we saw her use strong lip tones like red, burgundy, or pink, always well defined as they should be with a lip liner of the same color as her lipstick.

“This is a woman who has inspired us to look always radiant, which is why I encourage all of you to do the same. Whatever your weight, your age, your complexion, or your type of hair, you should always to always pay attention to these details to make your beauty shine its brightest.”
